A Nightmare On Elm Street came out in 1984 and was directed By Wes Craven and Stars Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, John Saxon and Johnny Depp in his first ever film Role.
The story
This film probably has the most unique premise of any horror film ever made, it makes sleep and dreaming the most terrifying things possible and part of the reason that is… Is because of Freddy Krueger played by the incredible Robert Englund. The story is about 4 teenagers who all share the same dream of a burn victim wearing a fedora, a Red and Green striped jumper and most badass of all… A glove with razor sharp blades on. One by one they all start dying because if freddy kills them in their dream they die in real life and it’s left to the main character Nancy Thompson to stop Freddy from killing anyone else.
Effects and other things
If you read my list on my top 15 Cinema masterpieces list you may notice I didn’t talk about Elm Street that much considering I love it so much. That’s mainly because I really wanted to review it this year at some point.. And here we are. This film has always been Special to me. As a kid I remember secretly watching clips of them on my phone really really quietly so I wouldn’t get caught, I went from being shit my pants scared of freddy Krueger one day, to mega fan the next day…. Even if the movies get worse and worse as the series goes on.
This film is fuckin amazing from the acting all the way down to the sets which probably impress me the most. Both Heather and Robert Kill it in there roles as do most of the cast, the teens are relatable and believable and all different from each other, they’re not just throw away characters that the killer can carve up to make the body count higher. All the effects…. Well most of them, still hold up today especially the very first kill of the film. The kill involves someone being cut open by freddy and seemingly dragged across the room by him, but we only see it happen in the real world so the person is being dragged without us seeing freddy, the crew did this by building a rotating room in which they had to nail everything down, they use this trick later on in the movie for another death scene and it still looks great.
The Soundtrack is also iconic, the main theme and Freddy’s theme are probably some of the most well known pieces of music in movie history and for good reason, the soundtrack is almost like a audio representation of a dream, weird, twisted and oddly freaky.
Freddy Krueger
I had to give the man his own section because.. Its Freddy Fuckin Krueger! This guy will always be my favourite horror icon, unlike Michael Myers (who is still badass as fuck) and Jason Voorhees, Freddy actually talks and has the most personality as well as the best and most creative Weapon. Wes Craven wanted something unique for his killers weapon instead of a boring old knife and had a glove built by Lou Carlucci. It’s unnerving and crude just like Kruegers backstory which is revealed later on in the film.
He was a child killer who would kill his victims using a leather work glove with knives attached to a metal Armature that he crudely constructed in a boiler room where he would take his victims. After he is spared prison after the search warrant wasn’t signed right the parents of the children track him down and burn him alive and as revenge he kills the remaining kids of springwood Ohio in their sleep.
And because Freddy is someone who attacks you in your dreams you can’t run away unlike with Jason and Michael, you have to sleep and if you do you will dream about him and chances are he’ll kill you after days of Psychological torment. The reason Freddy is as popular as he is though is massively because of one man…. Robert Englund. This guy IS Freddy Krueger and no one will ever best him in the role EVER. His performance is unlike any other out there and no matter how bad the films eventually get Robert will always be the best thing about it despite the awful scripts and direction.
Conclusion
Nightmare on elm street is a horror classic and a must see. My only real complaint is that the ending really really bugs me. Mainly because of the terrible effect of Marge being pulled into the window of the front door of 1428 Elm Street, even the characters being driven away in a Freddy car is ridiculous and it really knocks the score down to….. An 8/10! Despite the ending this film is absolutely amazing and it shows how determination will pay off, this films budget was ridiculously small and New Line cinema needed a genuine masterpiece to save their company and Elm street was that Masterpiece.
